Nest Thermostat Installation Video

Just a few days ago, a friend and I replaced her aging, mercury-switched ITT thermostat with the new Nest Learning Thermostat. Designed by former Apple SVP Tony Nadell, Nest is a sophisticated device, complete with WIFI connectivity. Not only can the Nest update itself via your wireless network, but you can control it by means of your iPhone, iPad or non-Apple devices. So cool, in fact, she quickly got the nickname ‘Nessie.’

Unlike that supposed monster, Nessie is truly beautiful, and comes with nearly every imaginable part and tool you might need to complete installation. In our experience, the only weak link were the drywall anchors. The plastic was so soft that they stripped out almost immediately. A quick trip to the hardware store brought replacements that finished the job soon after.

Pros

  • An aesthetically wonderful product (hello Museum of Modern Art);
  • Five (!) year warranty and support;
  • A very complete assortment of included accessories;
  • Excellent online faqs and tutorials;
  • Recyclable packaging; and
  • Making real-time efforts to save energy.
  • Now available from Amazon

Cons

  • Higher-than-usual price tag, compensated for by greater intelligence and features;
  • May require professional installation at an added cost of $119 for Nest’s concierge service, or at likely greater expense if you hire a licensed electrical or HVAC (heating, ventilating & air conditioning) contractor. Because this is a low voltage device, electrical contractors are not strictly necessary, but they are more likely to resolve any issues they come across.
  • While I think highly of Nest Labs, the company should show more prominently how to dispose of the thermostats it replaces. There are millions of mercury-switched thermostats, and mercury is extremely toxic. Linking Nest Labs’ site to Earth 911 is merely paying lip service to protecting the environment.

Lastly, this is RB’s first video, and obviously we learned a thing or two. Ok, ten is closer to the truth. Look forward to improvements!

And Go Nest! What will be your next product?
